Press Release

Date: April 9, 2015
Location: San Jose, CA

Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA17) will join representatives of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as they provide free tax return assistance for lower and middle income workers and families this Saturday, April 11, at 11:30am, at the Milpitas Public Library. Volunteers will be at the library from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m

"VITA is an important program that helps those who may not be able to afford accounting services get needed assistance with their tax returns," Congressman Honda said. "That's why I will be introducing legislation to strengthen its sustainability and quality. Everyone should have the opportunity to take full advantage of all of the deductions to which he or she is entitled."

According to the IRS, VITA's services are available "to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals." During the 2014 filing season, 96,000 IRS-certified volunteers, working at 9,300 tax assistance sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, prepared 3.2 million tax returns and brought back $3.9 billion in credits to working families.
